The 4th Cavalry Brigade, First Army Division East is a multi-component training Brigade.   Its mission is to Train Soldiers and Units for sustained combat operations.   Although the Brigade Headquarters and many subordinate Battalions are located at Fort Knox, Kentucky, the Saber Brigade trains Soldiers throughout the Continental United States.   It is comprised of six subordinate Battalions as well as the Brigade Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment.   The vast majority of Soldiers assigned to the Brigade serve as Observer/Trainers, with the primary mission to deploy to the training site and coach, teach, and mentor individual Soldiers and Units prior to and/or during Mobilization.

Composition 4th Brigade Change of Command

The Brigade is made up of Soldiers from the Active Component, the United States Army Reserve, the Army National Guard and from the Operation Warrior Trainer Program (from re-deploying Army National Guard and Army Reserve Units).   The six subordinate Battalions include a Cavalry Squadron, an Artillery Battalion, two Combat Service Support Battalions, one Engineer Battalion, and one Logistics Support Battalion.   Almost all Military Occupation Specialties are represented in the Brigade.   The Saber Brigade does not differentiate between components; all serving with this Brigade are Soldiers, adhering to the Army Standards.

Training 4th Brigade Conducts Lanes Training MEDEVAC Exercise
Upon assignment to the Saber Brigade, all Officers and Non-Commissioned Officers attend a 9-day Observer/Controller/Trainer Phase I Certification Program. The Certification Program is conducted at Brigade level and is designed to accomplish three specific objectives.   First, the program will teach and test five major “focus” areas that are common regardless of the type of training unit.   The five “Focus” areas are: Troop Leading Procedures, Company Level Intelligence Preparation of the Battlefield, Mounted Combat Patrol, Fire Distribution and Control (to include Escalation of Force), and an overview of Counterinsurgency Operations.   Second, the program is designed to inform all prospective Observer/Controller/Trainers on the mobilization process and desired outcomes of that process.   Finally, the program teaches mentorship and facilitator skills required for successful and in-depth After Action Reviews.   Once the Soldier is assigned to a unit, the Battalion Commander and Battalion Command Sergeant Major continue the certification program including extensive hands-on training with an experienced Observer/Controller/Trainer.   Additionally, all Trainers undergo annual re-certification to assure their success.   Saber Brigade Soldiers study their profession, ensure they stay abreast of currant doctrine and consistently update Tactics, Techniques, and improve the quality and relevance of our training.
